The Castle Chapel
In 1265 the archbishop of Mainz, Werner von Eppstein, constructs a dam at the most narrow point of the Laufach valley and retained the Laufach creek to a sizeable fish pond (the Weiber lake), he also constructed an animal park and built a castle next to and on the dam. He calls the complex “Castrum Vivarium”, to which the chapel that is built in the name of St. Vitus belongs. It translates to “Zoo Castle”.
When in the year 1552 a.d. the war hordes of the margrave Albrecht Alcibiades of Brandenburg, simultaneously burnt down the old castle of Aschaffenburg and the Weyber Castle, the chapel fell to the flames as well.
In the year 2009 the chapel was rebuilt by Peter B. Lehnardt. Here independent wedding ceremonies are celebrated once again. More than that the chapel also functions, due to its excellent acoustic, as a perfect location for musical events.
